New Record Set For SWOP!

July 1, 2007 - 8 Responses

Hi everyone!

First things first, an apology to those who did not get the e-mail about the change in hours for SWOP! yesterday. It was a last minute decision to shorten the hours to 4 to 8 pm due to the lack of manpower, and we are very sorry that a handful of you did not get it and arrived late. Still, we hope you got a few nice items :)

In any case, thank you all for coming down for SWOP #3 and making it a huge success! The good news is that we have topped all our previous collections, with a grand total of $421! As mentioned, the proceeds will be going to Club Rainbow and the SPCA, and leftover clothes will be donated to the Salvation Army.

Please note that the next SWOP is scheduled for some time in September; look out for it! We will be needing volunteers for that one so if you would like to help out for that, do let us know.

Lastly, if you have any feedback on SWOP, that would be much appreciated. Did you like the Home Club venue? Should we shorten our hours from 4 hours to 3 hours? Which charities can we donate to at the next SWOP? What are some ways it could be done better? Don’t hesitate to e-mail me at wessatong [at] gmail [dot] com.

Thank you! :)

EDIT: Please note that Swop will now be taking place from 4 to 8 pm, and that the location within Home Club has changed slightly. For more details, please read below!

The next SWOP draws near, yay!

To recap, SWOP #3 will be part of the Flea.Fly.Flo.Fun flea market happening this Saturday at Home Club. Look out for us inside the club; the swopping area will be at the dancefloor. We will be located outside the club, at the outdoor area behind the pool table.

Remember, all you need to bring is $5 and at least 5 items to swop!

Venue: Home Club, at The Riverwalk (20 Upper Circular Road, B1-01/06) [map here]

Date: Saturday, June 30th

Time: 4pm to 8 pm (but the flea market will go on till 10 pm)

Just some news and a few gentle reminders:

1) Our two selected charities for cash donations will be going to Club Rainbow and the SPCA. Thanks to Wenqi and Lynn for their suggestions! Leftover clothes will be donated to the Salvation Army as usual.

2) Please only bring items which are in good condition and fit for wearing. This means no old holey school T-shirts and mouldy pillowcases! (yes, those were just some of the items which we had to weed out at the last SWOP!).

3) While you are welcome to take as much as you want, please exercise discretion and take only what you really need or want. :)

4) New to swopping? Please read through the FAQ section.

That’s about it - looking forward to seeing all of you on Saturday, and have a great time swopping!

SWOP #3 - Which Charities?

June 8, 2007 - 2 Responses

SWOP #3 is happening on 30th June, and since it’s your money going to charity, we want YOU to decide which two charitable organisations we should donate to!

Past beneficiaries include Migrant Voices, Acres, Mercy Relief and Transient Workers Count Too.

If you have any suggestions, please leave them here as a comment or email me at wessatong [at] gmail [dot] com. Thanks! :D

SWOP #2 A Success!

April 3, 2007 - 5 Responses

Hello,

Thanks to all who made it to SWOP! on Sunday, we hope you enjoyed yourself! We collected, in total, $406 for Transient Workers Count Too and Mercy Relief :)

For those who could not make it, there will be another one in the next three or four months, we’ll let you know soon. And yes, we are seriously considering moving to a bigger venue so we can accommodate all of you!

Now an important notice: one swopper lost her hoodie jacket at SWOP, and it may have been mistakenly picked up by someone who thought it was a swopping item.

Here’s the description from its owner, Trina:

Descriptions of my jacket: It is very dark brown. it is definitely not pure black. Also, it has a hood. it is a very grunge style jacket, soft as well. it has zips, no buttons. Also, to diiferentiate itself, it has really unique subtle floral dotted prints on the sleeves and at
the back of it.

If you took Trina’s jacket, please return it to her, her email is trinavtan@gmail.com.

Thanks!

SWOP! Reservations are Closed!

March 24, 2007 - No Responses

Dear all,

All 100 places for the next SWOP! on April 1st have now been filled up.

If you e-mailed us and received a reply e-mail confirming your reservation, that means you’re in. If you are not on our list, then I’m afraid you won’t be allowed in :(

Once again, sorry that we can’t accommodate all of you. If response remains good, we will definitely look into holding SWOP! at a larger venue in the future.

Thanks again!

SWOP! Registration

March 22, 2007 - 3 Responses

Hi all,

Thanks for all your interest! So far, there are a staggering 180+ names on our mailing list. We never thought it would become this popular!

However, due to such overwhelming demand, we have decided to limit the number of people who can attend SWOP!

The flat is really tiny and we are now quite nervous about so many people coming (three times the crowd at the last one). We hate limiting it, but we reckon that SWOP! wouldn’t be enjoyable if it’s too crowded.

Hence, we are opening SWOP#2 to just 100 people. If you are *definitely sure* that you can make it for SWOP on April 1st, then please send an e-mail to wessatong @ gmail [dot] com with the subject header ‘i want to SWOP!’.

Please include:

- Your full name

- The names of the friends whom you are bringing, so we can accommodate them too.

The first 100 people to e-mail us will get in.

Thank you for your understanding!

SWOP! Request + Charities

March 14, 2007 - 3 Responses

Hello all,

Thank you very much for your support! The response has been overwhelming (over 140 on the mailing list, and still counting…) and we are looking forward to seeing all of you at our next SWOP! on April 1st!

First, a brief request.

You are still encouraged to bring lots of stuff, however please make sure that the clothes you are bringing are in good condition and can still be worn. Please do not bring grubby, torn, smelly, or worn-out stuff that nobody would want to wear. Ratty and holey PE T-shirts are definitely not welcome ;)

We are anticipating a very big turnout and therefore a high volume of stuff to process, and if you only bring items in good condition you would make our lives much easier :)

And secondly, an update on our chosen charities for SWOP#2:

Transient Workers Count Too is a non-profit organisation that campaigns for migrant workers’ rights, through public education and research. (We at SWOP! feel this is a worthy cause as it is high time that migrant workers in Singapore, especially the lowly-paid ones like construction workers or maids, be treated with more dignity and respect.)

Mercy Relief is a humanitarian organisation that gives aid to disaster victims in the region and beyond. It has helped thousands of people in Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Lebanon and China, and its last project involved helping flood victims in Johor.

And of course, all leftover clothes will be given to the Salvation Army. Past charities which we have donated to include Migrant Voices and Acres.

Thanks for reading! You can find out about our next event here. Sign up for the mailing list by leaving a comment anywhere on this site. And don’t forget to read our FAQ page. :)

The Return of SWOP!

March 6, 2007 - 32 Responses

We have had to limit places due to overwhelming demand. Please see this post.

Your boss sucks. You have too much homework. And you don’t have anything new to wear to the clubs this weekend.

Well chuck out your worries along with yer handbags and gladrags at SWOP! This time it’s not just your clothes and accessories, but books, CDs, and DVDs that are welcome too!

You’ll pay $5 at the door (all proceeds will go to charity), get to choose from other people’s items, and the best part is, you get to take home as much stuff as you want!

If nothing tickles your fancy, fear not. Sprout & Bean and fellow vintagewear label BeatnikBaby will be selling their lovely dresses and other great finds sourced from London and New York.

Meanwhile, our fave neighbours Bangers And Mash will be hawking vintage toys, books and accessories from the UK and China.

Date: Sunday, April 1st (no, not a joke!)

Time: 3 pm - 7 pm

Venue: 2B Perumal Road, off Serangoon Road, near Mustafa Centre [map]
